Review: JJ Grey & Mofro (10/11/08 in Atlanta)
October 14, 2008
We saw JJ Grey & Mofro perform this past weekend at The Variety Playhouse and, as usual, JJ and the boys didn’t disappoint. We had the good fortune to meet JJ after the show (pictured above) and must convey that he posseses none of the usual celebrity pretense and is easily one of the most approachable musicians we’ve ever met. We were appreciative of the dynamic, high energy show we had just witnessed and he was genuinely pleased that we enjoyed it.
Hidden Track asked us to write a review of the show, which you can read here.
Was anyone else at the show? If so, let us know what you thought!

Great review y’all! You crammed a lot of info into your space. Nice job of giving a visual to those of us who weren’t there. I run the Mofro fansite, Danny sent me your article, I posted it today so more can enjoy. Couple of fans on the msg board were there and loved it! JJ is great isn’t he? He makes you feel so at ease…he’s one-of-a-kind. Holler if you’re ever coming Tampa way. Got some good live music here we’ll turn you onto.

What an outstanding performance! As usual. Gregg & I drove to the Atlanta outskirts this weekend to see JJ Grey & Mofro play at the Variety Playhouse with Glenn & Karen. (it was my early birthday present!!) It was one of those small venues that holds about 900-ish folks. Hill Country Revue opened for Mofro, and they were pretty good. It was very interesting to see the washboard incorporated within some of their songs. Mofro played for just about 2 1/2 hours. They performed all but 2 of the songs off thier new CD, Orange Blossoms. This CD is a bit different than the others, but is awesome just the same. Very Rhythm and Blues based. And as always, the lyrics are true JJ at his best. They performed songs from each of their previous CD’s and the audience took that to heart. His rendition of “How Jr got his head put out” displayed his amazing ability with the harmonica – just incredible!! JJ proved his worthiness as a guitar player that evening. He did a pretty impressive finish with one of his guitars for the ending of “Lochloosa” that left his strings smokin’. They had 2 encores and one was an astounding rendition of “The Sun Is Shining Down” which he played with deep down soul that brought the house down. Got a chance to talk to JJ afterwards and he was as down to earth as us simple folk. I look forward to seeing them perform at the Exit/In next month in Nashville!! Til next time………… Peace,Karla
