RIP — Merl Saunders (1934-2008)
October 24, 2008
Sadly we’ve lost another musician, Merl Saunders. I personally remember seeing him perform on his legendary Blues From The Rainforest tour back in ’93 and spoke to him briefly after the show. I told him how cool it was that he passed out rain sticks and percussive instruments to the crowd and that I thoroughly enjoyed the show. He was a true class act will be missed. Click here to access a great Jerry Garcia/ Merl Saunders download we’ve offered here at MSD.
Marin Independent Journal:
Merl Saunders, a keyboardist who collaborated with Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia in the 1970s and went on to earn the title of “the godfather of jam bands,” died Friday morning at Kaiser hospital in San Francisco of complications from a stroke. He was 74.
Mr. Saunders, who was born in San Mateo and grew up in San Francisco, is best remembered for his partnership with Garcia, playing legendary club dates as “Legion of Mary” and then as “Garcia/Saunders,” and recording the albums “Heavy Turbulence,” “Fire Up” and “Live at the Keystone.”
He was a guest player on the 1971 album “Grateful Dead,” and served as musical director with the band on the “Twilight Zone” television show in the mid-1980s.
Mr. Saunders apprenticed with the famed organist Jimmy Smith and is credited with teaching the great American songbook to the rock- and folk-oriented Garcia.
“Blues from the Rainforest,” their 1990 collaboration, hit the Billboard Top 10 in the New Age category.
In recent years, Mr. Saunders was revered as the senior member of the jamband world, playing with Phish, Frank Sinatra, Blues Traveler and Widespread Panic.
After suffering a stroke six years ago, he lost the use of one of his hands and his ability to speak, but remained a vibrant presence on the Bay Area music scene.
“Boy, did he get the most out of what he had left,” said Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart.
He is survived by two sons, Anthony Saunders and Merl Saunders Jr., and a daughter, Susan Saunders.

Dusty Springfield — Spooky
October 24, 2008
We are but a week away from Halloween, so here’s something that’s kind of “spooky” from Dusty Springfield.
Here’s a story we found about Dusty on Findadeath.com:
Trivia: Dusty, a confirmed bisexual, did a concert in 1979 at the Albert Hall, in London. Princess Margaret was in the Royal Box. An army of hand waving lesbians and gay men greeted Dusty’s arrival on stage. Then she wickedly announced, “I’m glad to see that the royalty here tonight is not only confined to the Royal Box.” Princess Margaret did not understand the joke (lush), and questioned the remark, as she could not see any other royalty. When her escorts explained, the Princess walked out.
Mike Gordon — Congratulations!

Picture this, you’re a very successful soul singer at your peak in 1974, with groupies and the like all over the place. You are widely renowned and loved (this has been established), you go to take a shower and who pops in but a jealous ex-girlfriend who pours a boiling pot of grits over you, giving you third degree burns all over your body. Actually the scalding grits had stuck to your body with the steam of the shower and your ex-girlfriend went into the next room and offed herself with one of your prized pistols.
Well, that’s what happened to Al Green. He calls the event a “wake-up call” that he needed to turn his life around. Al became an ordained pastor and has served and worshipped at the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Memphis, TN for the past 33 years. Amen brother!

James Brown recorded his legendary Live At The Apollo album. Here’s Allmusic.com’s review of the 2004 re-release:
The 2004 Deluxe Edition of James Brown’s Live at the Apollo (recorded in October of 1962 and issued in 1963) really is a deluxe issue. For starters, it was taken from the same undubbed stereo master as the 1990s version, keeping it separate from previously issued versions with overdubbed applause and “fixed” sequences. Because the technology of transferring analog tape to digital has improved greatly in the last decade and a half, the amount of information that can be moved from one source to another is far greater, translating into higher fidelity. The way this evidences itself here is in the feel of the room on this set. One can actually feel the Apollo as a room. It’s as if the listener is on the stage rather than in the audience, soaking up the same atmosphere as the band. It’s almost beyond live. Secondly, the crispness of the guitars and horns on this version has to be heard to be believed. It’s not harsh, not shrill, just immediate and crystal clear. (Conitune Reading…)
