Jerry Garcia — Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
November 22, 2008
Here’s Jerry smoking a cigar with Ashley Judd and singing “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” by Jerome Kern. Perhaps not coincidentally, this song was written by the man for whom Jerry was named by his parents, Joe and Ruth Garcia. This song was recorded for the 1995 movie Smoke and starred Ashley Judd, Harvey Keitel and William Hurt.

John F. Kennedy (1917-1963)
November 22, 2008
45 years ago today we lost the most charismatic and one of our country’s most influential presidents, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Born into a wealthy Massachusetts family, Kennedy was a senator, a Pulitzer Prize winner and PT Boat commander. His presidency saw the rise of the Civil Rights movement, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the early stages of the Vietnam War and the Space Race. Kennedy was a man that squeezed a lot of living into his 43 years. He hung with Rat Pack, most notably Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe. Many feel that our country lost its innocence that day in Dallas, when Kennedy was struck down by assassins’ bullets. The country was left to wonder what could’ve been with another Kennedy term in the White House. The theories behind his assassination are countless. Was it the Mafia? Was it Castro? Perhaps we’ll never know for sure, but hopefully as another president starts his term, we will stand together, united in support, regardless of party affiliation.

Paul McCartney — “Psychedelic” Beatles track to be released?
November 22, 2008
In an interview with BBC Radio 4, Paul McCartney revealed that he is trying to release a Beatles song that some swore didn’t exist. “Carnival of Light” is supposedly a 14-minute improvised psychedelic jam the band recorded in 1967 and was left off of the Anthology releases because it was “too adventurous.” “The time has come for its moment,” said McCartney, who is looking into getting approval from Ringo Starr and the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison to release the track. “I like it because it’s like the Beatles free.” McCartney didn’t provide a time frame for the song’s release or whether it would be included on a compilation or exist as a stand-alone song.
Bela Fleck’s Africa Project
November 22, 2008
From Jambands.com:
The documentary film Throw Down Your Heart, which premiered at the 2008 South by Southwest film festival, traced Bela Fleck’s travels to Africa in search of the banjo’s roots. In 2009 Fleck will be joined by a number of the musicians he encountered during his journey through Uganda, Tanzania, The Gambia, and Mali. Bela Fleck’s Africa Project will feature the banjo player on stage with a number of these players for a series of gigs that is expected to cross the country in the spring. Meanwhile, Fleck is in San Francisco this weekend for two performances with the Flecktones at Yoshi’s before the group travels to Hawaii for a series of dates. For a bit more on these endeavors, stay tuned for our feature interview with Fleck, which will appear shortly on the site.
