buddyguyFrom Jambands.com:

Last night, Umphrey’s McGee opened up its three night New Year’s Eve run and welcomed a local guitar legend to the stage. At the close of the band’s first set, the group brought out Buddy Guy, who has been synonymous with Chicago’s electric blues since the late 1950s. Guy sat in for “Hoochie Coochie Man,” “She’s Only 19″ and “Damn Right I’ve Got the Blues.” In addition, as we reported yesterday, Jeff Coffin also was on hand and contributed to a number of songs, including: “Resolution,” “Intentions Clear” a second set “Jimmy Stewart” and the evening’s encore, a take on Billy Joel’s “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” (which the band last covered on New Year’s Eve 2002). Tonight, Umphrey’s will return to the Auditorium Theatre.

merle-jerry-motownWe hate to get all TMZ on ya, but apparently the estate of Merle Saunders is suing the estate of Jerry Garcia for unpaid royalties stemming from the 2004 archival Garcia/Saunders release., Keystone Berkeley. Garcia died in ’95 and Saunders died a few months back in ’08, but we’re pretty certain that neither would be too thrilled with this turn of events.

mmjAfter touring the US, playing marathon show after marathon show and releasing Evil Urges, My Morning Jacket has been named “Band Of The Year” by Jambase.com.

“Music to me is really spiritual. In my brain, music is kind of everything. Music is the glue that holds life together,” says bandleader Jim James. “I’ve always been the kind of person that really believes in God or some kind of force, some kind of spirit, but I’ve never been able to put a name on it. So, to me, the most transcendental, beautifully religious moments I’ve ever had have been either listening to music with some close friends or playing music.”(more…)

Delaney & BonnieSadly, Delaney Bramlett passed on Saturday after complications from gall bladder surgery.  A songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Delaney was chiefly known for his partnership with his former wife, Bonnie Bramlett as Delaney And Bonnie. Opening for Clapton/Winwood supergroup, Blind Faith in 1969, Bramlett formed a unique mentorship with a “disenchanted with being a rock star” Eric Clapton, ultimately touring with Clapton in ’69-’70. Penning the early classic Clapton recording, “Let It Rain”, Bramlett’s folksy approach to writing and recording reflected his Mississippi upbringing. Here he is with Bonnie, Dave Mason of Traffic and Eric Clapton, performing “Poor Elijah” from 1969:
