“It’s a shame that jazz is now being turned into dried fruit. It’s becoming quantized, diced and defined. To me, jazz is more like a process than it is a thing.”

Happy Birthday — John Lennon
October 9, 2009
Happy birthday to John Winston Lennon, who would have turned 69 today. The Beatles are deservedly in their umpteenth revival with the release of their Remasters and the Rockband video game. I personally pay tribute to John almost daily, as there is rarely a day that passes in which I don’t listen to one of his songs. I think that John was a creative genius who possessed one of the best rock and roll voices ever. His voice had that gritty quality that could be biting, stinging and downright caustic. It could also be gentle, tender and extremely vulnerable. I love the beauty of “Julia”, his melodic take on “Twist and Shout”, the Liverpool scowl of “I Am The Walrus”, I could go on and on. Literally. To steal a line from Office Space, “I celebrate his entire catalogue.”I wish he was still around and would love to hear his take on the current state of the music biz.
Here’s one of John’s great songs, credited to Lennon/McCartney, “All You Need Is Love”. This clip was broadcast via satellite on the first live global television link. It was broadcast to 26 countries and watched by 400 million viewers on June 25 1967. Look closely in the crowd for an ex-economics student that went by the name of Jagger.
On a personal note, I’d like to thank John for the undeniable mark he left on pop culture, rock music and my life.
